(Note: Do not flash recoveries built for the LTE model SM-J120F / j1xlte, as they use different kernel source trees and partition tables. Use the official/verified j1x3g image).
FRP & OEM Lock: Ensure your Google account and Samsung account are removed before flashing, and verify that OEM Unlocking is toggled ON to avoid triggering Custom Binary Blocked by FRP Lock or write authorization failures in Odin.
Data Backup: Back up all important contacts, SMS, and personal media before beginning.
Required Files & Tools:
Odin3 (v3.10.7, v3.12.3, or v3.13.1 recommended for Spreadtrum/Lollipop devices).
Official Samsung Mobile USB Drivers installed on PC.
Verified twrp-j1x3g-j120h.tar file.
Reliable Micro-USB data cable connected directly to a rear PC motherboard USB port.
SuperSU or Magisk ZIP file to achieve root and prevent stock Android from restoring stock recovery on boot.
Tap Build Number 7 times continuously until the "Developer mode has been turned on" message appears.
Return to Settings > Developer Options.
Toggle USB Debugging to ON.
Toggle OEM Unlocking to ON (Crucial: If this toggle is off, Odin will fail with SECURE CHECK FAIL: RECOVERY or freeze at boot with Custom Binary Blocked by FRP Lock).
Step 2: Boot into Samsung Download Mode
Power off the phone completely.
Press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power buttons simultaneously until the teal warning screen appears.
Press Volume Up once to confirm and enter Download Mode (Odin Mode).
Step 3: Flash TWRP via Odin
Launch Odin3 as Administrator on your PC.
Connect your phone to the PC using the Micro-USB cable. The ID:COM box will light up in light blue or yellow.
Click the AP (or PDA) button and select your twrp-j1x3g-j120h.tar file.
Go to the Options tab in Odin:
Keep F. Reset Time checked.
Uncheck Auto Reboot (Crucial: Prevents TouchWiz from automatically rebooting into the system and overwriting TWRP with the stock 3e recovery).
Click Start and wait for Odin to display the green PASS! status.
Step 4: First Boot into TWRP Recovery & Root
Disconnect the Micro-USB cable.
Force power off the phone by removing the battery for 3–5 seconds, then reinsert it (or press and hold Volume Down + Power for 7 seconds until the screen shuts off completely).
Immediately press and hold Volume Up + Home + Power simultaneously.
Release all buttons the exact moment the Samsung boot logo appears with tiny recovery text at the top left corner.
The device will boot straight into the TWRP interface.
Inside TWRP:
Swipe to allow system modifications.
Go to Wipe > Advanced Wipe and clear Cache and Dalvik / ART Cache.
Go to Install and flash SuperSU.zip or Magisk.zip to permanently prevent stock recovery auto-restoration and gain root privileges.
